Coupling Components: Complete Anatomy
Before selecting or installing an industrial coupling, it is important to understand each of its components and the specific function it performs within the power transmission system.

Hubs
The hubs are the two metal components mounted directly onto the driving shaft and the driven shaft. Each hub features a bore whose diameter must match the corresponding shaft diameter. Depending on the coupling design and the amount of torque to be transmitted, the hub is secured to the shaft using a key, a set screw, or a combination of both.
Power Transmission Element
This is the component that physically connects the two hubs and transmits torque from one shaft to the other. Its design varies depending on the type of coupling: Spider (elastomer insert): A central rubber or polyurethane element used in jaw couplings. Metal grid: A flexible steel grid used in grid couplings to transmit torque while accommodating misalignment. Disc pack: A set of thin metallic discs used in disc couplings for high-precision, maintenance-free torque transmission. Gear sleeve: A gear-toothed sleeve used in gear couplings to transmit high torque while allowing shaft misalignment.
Shaft Attachment System
Auxiliary Components
Safety guard: A protective cover that shields personnel from the rotating coupling. It is mandatory in most industrial installations to comply with workplace safety regulations. Spacer: An additional section installed between the two hubs when the distance between shafts exceeds that of a standard coupling. It is commonly used in vertical pump applications. Understanding the function of each of these components makes it easier to diagnose coupling failures and order the correct replacement part without having to replace the entire coupling assembly.
