Unlike a pump with a constant load, a conveyor belt often starts with material already on it, generating a starting torque peak significantly higher than the continuous operating torque. The gearmotor must withstand this repeated peak without fatigue, which requires applying the correct service factor from the selection stage.
Recommended Configuration
Mounting: Shaft-mounted reducer with a torque arm, installed directly on the conveyor drive pulley, following the standard established by the Dodge TXT series since 1949. Reducer type: For light to medium-duty conveyors, a worm gear reducer is usually sufficient; for heavy-duty conveyors or mining applications, a parallel shaft reducer with a higher service factor is recommended. Backstop: Recommended for inclined conveyors to prevent the material from causing the belt to move backward if the motor stops unexpectedly.
Variable Frequency Drives in Conveyor Belts
Using a variable frequency drive (VFD) for soft motor starting reduces the torque peak transmitted to the gearmotor, which may allow selecting a lower service factor than would be required with a direct-on-line start, reducing equipment cost without compromising service life.
