Gearmotor Maintenance: Complete Guide
A simple preventive maintenance program can prevent most premature failures in industrial gearmotors. This guide summarizes what to inspect and how often.

Periodic Visual Inspection
Every three to six months under normal operating conditions, inspect the gearmotor for oil leaks at seals and joints, corrosion on the housing, and verify that the oil level matches the indicator. In critical or continuous-operation equipment, this inspection should be performed monthly.
Oil Change
The mineral or synthetic oil inside the reducer degrades over time and with operating temperature. The recommended change interval varies depending on the manufacturer and operating hours, but as a general reference, reducers using mineral oil require more frequent changes than those using factory-filled synthetic oil, such as the aluminum units in the NMRV series.
Temperature and Vibration Monitoring
In critical equipment, periodic analysis of housing temperature and vibration allows internal wear to be detected before it results in a failure that stops production. A gradual increase in temperature without changes in load conditions is often the first sign of a developing internal problem.
Service Life Record
Keeping a record of when each gearmotor was installed and when each oil change was performed allows maintenance to be anticipated before failure signs appear, reducing the risk of an unplanned production shutdown.
